Sakagura, which means sake warehouse, was founded in 1996 and has become one of the top sake bars in the United States, attracting countless sake connoisseurs.

Sakagura offers over 200 kinds of carefully selected sake, various tapas-style dishes (with the exception of sushi), and homemade desserts. Midtown's most interesting dining options are usually the hardest to find—a second-floor place here, a snack counter hidden in the back of a store there. The rule holds true for Sakagura, a Japanese joint specializing in soba tucked into a basement on East 43rd Street near Third Avenue. (Not to be confused with Soba Totto, a Japanese joint specializing in soba just upstairs from Sakagura.)

Lunch sets, priced at about $11-$20, are the most popular lunch option. Especially good are the daily lunch specials: authentic sets made in limited quantities of 30 orders or less. Nearly all sets feature hot or cold soba that is made on premises and has a nice bite and rich mouth feel. Diners with room for dessert may want black sesame crème brulee or coffee Jell-O (popular among Sakagura's Japanese clientele).

Sakagura is busy at lunch; those on a tight schedule may want to call ahead. Return after work for another kind of refreshment—the house boasts one of the widest sake selections in the U.S., with more than 200 varieties on offer.
